British Auteurs

The Guild's collection of British films in which individual directorial vision is considered to have outweighed the demands of commerce, convention or audience expectation.

The collection is necessarily small. British cinema has produced no shortage of films which have been described as personal, eccentric or difficult. The Guild's interest is restricted to those works in which such qualities appear to have become central to the finished film.

A modest tradition

The Guild does not use the term "auteur" as a general mark of quality. It is employed here in its narrower sense, referring to works whose distinctive character appears to derive from the sustained intervention of an individual filmmaker.

In several cases the evidence for such attribution is necessarily circumstantial. The Guild nevertheless considers this uncertainty part of the interest of the collection.
